PhpMyDirectory Review

Posted by Adi Wong On April - 22 - 2008

I have recently purchase a PhpMyDirectory Script and I find it quite useful and easy to use. Overall I find it quite useful for a business directory. Comparing it with PhpLinkDirectory, PhpMyDirectory is slightly pricey at USD99.95 but if you do not want to do a link back to PhpLinkDirectory, this would put both script at the same league.

I have done a Hospital Supplies directory as you can see below. I have tried editing around and find it very user friendly and perfect for a B2B or B2C trading directory.

The benefit of this script is the features.

SEO Friendly link
This is the very first features I look for when buying a script, it will always be good to have SEO Friendly Link and also change in the Title Tag when a company detail is clicked

Contact Details
Contact detail could be hidden, so that user will have to use your homepage to contact the company inside your directory for the first time. This would encourage more usage of your website for visitor loyalty.

Administrator
This is pretty much the same as other script directory but there is slightly more controls and administrator because of the extra functions in contact details, products, images and membership. Overall, you have the statistics, listing approval, payment processor, banning and filters, backup, import, and all other common admin tools.

Products Directory
Other than listing a company and its detail, company could list their products with picture and detail, documents (for certification or Quality System). If you look at the picture towards the left, you could see a list of features which is very suitable for business directory.

Three Templates
Unlike most directory which comes in a standard templates and there is a lot of third party templates who charges for it. PhpMyDirectory have three different templates, I have edited the original templates, but there is 2 other templates. One of which is a Yellow Pages templates.

Membership
Although I do not have intention to charge for Membership anytime soon, but this is a great option as you could provide more resources if someone would like to host more products and images with your directory.

Less Commitment

If you have plan to continue updating your website, PhpMyDirectory comes with a one year free upgrade. Unlike PhpLinkDirectory, you may only get 6 months if they decides to upgrade to version 4.0. Also, they charge USD10.00 for supporter forum.

Summary
I think it is quite worth the money to have this script as you could potentially gain more from membership and advertisements. Plus you will get discount for your second directory script at only $49.95. This is a whooping $50 discount.

After sometime not access the Internet, I thought that I will have some time before my flight at 18:35 back to Malaysia. I drop by Starbucks to buy a Mango Passion Drink and only to find that there is actually no Wireless Internet Access in Starbucks located Inside Jakarta International Airport. I actually thought all Starbucks are equip with Internet Access, but I know that it is not free in every single country.

Here is a view from Starbucks of Jakarta International Airport. It actually have a pretty nice view. But I could not do anything other than typing some blog post from my Windows Live Writer and charging my ipod at the same time.

Twhirl – Twitter Windoes

Posted by Adi Wong On April - 19 - 2008

Twhirl was actually recommend by Kevin on my Top 8 Twitter Application Post, and it is actually far better compare to Twitteroo which could be found on Twitter official download page. Twhirl would actually kicks Twitteroo 5 blocks down the road in terms of the features and compatibility.  It is compatible with Windows and Mac. This is because it is running on Adobe AIR, which could run application across-operating system.

What I like about it is that I could shortern url and add pictures easily. Plus a reply feature which is missing from Twitteroo. Running multiple account is also great if you have Twitter Group/Another Twitter account to control.

This are the listed features on their web.

  • runs on both Windows (2000/XP/Vista) and Mac OSX
  • connects to multiple Twitter accounts
  • notifications on new tweets
  • shorten long URLs (using snurl or is.gd)
  • cross-post updates to Pownce and Jaiku
  • post images to TwitPic
  • search tweets (using TweetScan or terraminds)
  • timeline filtering
  • localized to English, German, Italian and Spanish
  • color schemes
  • automatically check for new versions

Gmail Custom Time

Posted by Adi Wong On April - 18 - 2008

Gmail Custom Time, you could actually alter the date and time an email is sent and best of all you could set them to unread.I just found out about this new feature and there is actually good and bad to it.

Timeline of email communication is actually very crucial, I think this will actually do more harm than good. Especially in business which I use email a lot, what if you have sent someone a good, then sending them a bill which is larger saying that the new prices was already sent on a date.

Even the beta users testimonials is already saying about the harm of it.
