RB Mumbles

Posted by Adi Wong On July - 16 - 2008

I am too busy to plan what to write this days. This is why this post has not title. I have been playing around with Domtab tab navigation scripts. It was first introduce to my by this WordPress Forte Theme. The idea of having tabs is great because it looks neater and visitor do not see a website with too many information and at the same time search engine spiders will be able to see all tabs.

Domtab could be easily installed into any script by just running the script at the header and then having your tabber code place wherever you want. The only problem I faced is arranging the css as I am not really good at it.

Also, WordPress 2.6 is available with some new nifty features.

Here is a list of the features

  • Word count! Never guess how many words are in your post anymore.
  • Image captions, so you can add sweet captions like Political Ticker does under your images.
  • Bulk management of plugins.
  • A completely revamped image control to allow for easier inserting, floating, and resizing. It’s now fully integrated with the WYSIWYG.
  • Drag-and-drop reordering of Galleries.
  • Plugin update notification bubble.
  • Customizable default avatars.
  • You can now upload media when in full-screen mode.
  • Remote publishing via XML-RPC and APP is now secure (off) by default, but you can turn it on easily through the options screen.
  • Full SSL support in the core, and the ability to force SSL for security.
  • You can now have many thousands of pages or categories with no interface issues.
  • Ability to move your wp-config file and wp-content directories to a custom location, for “clean” SVN checkouts.
  • Select a range of checkboxes with “shift-click.”
  • You can toggle between the Flash uploader and the classic one.
  • A number of proactive security enhancements, including cookies and database interactions.
  • Stronger better faster versions of TinyMCE, jQuery, and jQuery UI.
  • Version 2.6 fixes approximately 194 bugs.

Plurk: Another Microblogging Platform

Posted by Adi Wong On July - 14 - 2008

I felt that there is actually too many Microblogging Platform coming out. Some do make it and others just fade away as time goes. My first Microblogging was Jaiku, because I felt more comfortable using it compare to Twitter with its comment nested with the topic starter and having feed included. Felt bad that Google acquire it and did not do anything other than keeping it invite only.

Plurk seems to be did something write compare to others with its weird emoticons, proper timeline, expression and karma. Although Plurk will does seem to have downtime, people are still giving it a try because it is new and there is space for correction.

Overall, Plurking is pretty simply and it look pretty simple to share video and picture with plurk. The timeline will need some getting use to and the emoticons and karma thing is pretty fun for Microblogging extras. Although it still lacks of Mobile Plurking capability, which I think should come by soon.

Join me at my Plurk.

Transfering to Another Webhosting – WordPress

Posted by Adi Wong On July - 11 - 2008

I have just moved my server to Host Gator, away from Dreamhost. Not because Dreamhost is bad, but speedtest Host Gator website and it seems much faster for me to load and I prefer cpanel. Another server which I had the last month was at Steadfast, it loads very slowly from Malaysia, but speedtest shows that it is the fastest among this three webhosting.

Changing webhosting is a pretty easy job for WordPress. Here is the step by step instructions:-

  1. Download your domain directory
  2. Export your database (MySQL) from phpmyadmin
  3. Upload your domain
  4. Create your database & username (it does not need to be same as the old database)
  5. Upload database to you newlycreated username with phpmyadmin
  6. edit wp-config with your newlycreated username and password
  7. Add the nameserver of your new webhosting
  8. Delete them after a day or 2.
  9. Done!

Note: there may be some post / comments missing while you are doing step 7 & 8. This is because some of the post / comments went to the previous webhosting.

I did my own solution by editing some option on phpmyadmin with adding a ’2′ behind my description. When I see the 2 appearing on my description, I know that that is the new webhosting server.

If you have any problems, let me know. I could try and help.

Blogging from the Scratch Pt 3

Posted by Adi Wong On July - 9 - 2008

After the first blogging from the scratch and second,  you should now be able to get some traffic to your blog. If you still manages to blog in a constant frequency, you are already a 1½ months old blogger, congrats. The very main thing that you should learn from blogging is consistency. With consistency, you could start building your reader loyalty network.

Getting reader is a hard job, but getting them to come back or subscribe to your feed is an even harder task. Therefore it will require you to provide great deal of thoughts on your blog post that would interest your reader.

Consistency
It is good to let you reader know when they should come back for new information. This way they won’t be disappointed to come back and see if there is no update or too many updates. Even search engine bot would like this because they would know how frequent to comeback for new updates.

Frequency / Quantity Posts
If you do 5 posts in a day and stop posting for the next five days. This would be a bad idea. If you use Timestamp, you could actually make one post each days. Visitor will be ready to come back for more and there is no Information Overload.

Layout
Having a good navigation layout is essential for visitor to take a second look at your website. Do no clutter your blog with information and Do no clutter them with advertisements. A balance between blog information and advertisements is important to keep the visitor comfortable at your blog.

Replying to Comments
Communication is one of the major differences between a website and a blog. Readers like to be able to give feedback/comments about a blog post. This is actually good because you will see some motivational feedback and some good critics that could potentially make you better.
