Moving WordPress to Another Host via SSH

Posted by Adi Wong On March - 22 - 2010

This trick actually works well with most php scripts. There is lots of benefit to this rather than ftp out the file from your old host then ftp back all the files to new host. The better I would suggest is to zip your folder for the particular domain whereby you can use the following command:-

tar -zcvf zipfilename.tar.gz foldername/

ie. You moving a domain at riceblogger.com/. use command: tar -zcvf riceblogger.tar.gz riceblogger.com/

then move the zip file to your new host via ftp. To extract .tar.gz, you use this command

tar -zxvf riceblogger.tar.gz

I had no other choice to expore these command because I have a classifieds that contain few thousands of picture in a folder, with Filezilla, I could only display 2000, and I kept missing pictures. With zipping, I can download and upload much faster.

There is also ways to extract large MySQL via SSH. I will post them later. Since I start learning more SSH for my 9 to 6 job, I found it so useful, and it also helps in my experience as a webmaster/blogger/internet marketer. Not to forget my previous post Upgrading WordPress via SSH, it is still useful when we want to install a new blog, or the automatic upgrade is not working.

Convert PSD to WordPress Theme

Posted by Adi Wong On March - 8 - 2010

Getting a design converted from PSD to WordPress tedious work if you do not know what you are up to. There are services out there that charges for conversion. Devine Project is actually a free tool where you can convert PSD to WordPress Theme for free, yup, you can download and make your own theme for free. Of course, there is limitation but it is more than sufficient for you to make a theme with the free software provided by them.

I tried, it is not that simple, but they have some great step-by-step tutorial where you can follow to create the theme of your imagination.

Cakap.my – My fail Malaysia Microblogging Site

Posted by Adi Wong On March - 6 - 2010

Cakap.my was bought a year ago hoping that Status.net (previously laconi.ca) script will actually do better. It actually did better but forgot to address the one most important issue, SPAM. I kinda like this domain and have spend time installing this microblogging script 3 times at different host.

FYI, Status.net is a free twitter script. It is a pretty nice script with the plugin for Facebook Apps and Twitter Apps integration. So you can automatically update both from one micro-blogging site. I manage to setup everything in few hours time but when I brought it live for testing and posted a link at their WiKi, spam started to come one by one. Then I activated Re-Captcha, but it did not keep them out for long. Everytime I got some spam from the user, I had to go phpMyAdmin to execute few lines of SQL as there is no control panel.

This was the same problem with Pligg that uses Re-Captcha I had installed for one of my website. After migrating to WordPress, it works like a charm.

I got the domain for another year, hopefully I could do another great install or find some other ussage for this.

YouTube Advertisements

Posted by Adi Wong On March - 2 - 2010

This is quite irritating, as youtube advertisements are actually playing before and after the video you would like to play. This new YouTube ads have no skip buttong, you will have to watch the whole 30 seconds ads.

But this would be a new channel for Internet markerter to buy some advertisements slots, and this would be limited to those who could make video advertisements.
