Since Overture service is no longer available, as it has not been working for more than 6 months and the search database is on January 2007 which is way out of date. There is a need for other service, but this information could only be provided by the big time search engine itself and Google have Google Trend and Keyword Selector Tool.
Google Trend provides limited information other than the graph of searches base on events happening across the time phrase. It is not really practical to use because there is no numbers and no comparison to base the chart upon. The only good indication is the Hot Trend Searches for the day (only USD). You will be supprise that weird words and names are on the top.
Google Keyword Selector Tool is much more useful but again, there is no numbers. You will not know how many thousand, hundred or ten a search has been made. But there is comparison with other similar word phrase.
There is not much hope for a real alternative because only Google, Yahoo or maybe Live (MSN) could provide them as they are the major search engine. It will always be best that the Big G will provide them but I highly doubt them.
