Bad Grammar in Blogging does not exists

Posted by Adi Wong On January - 31 - 2008

Yesterday, I have a comment about bad grammar in my blog and I feel that this people is just trying to let people down and asking people to stop blogging. First off all, even big time blogger who earns 5 to 6 figures income have bad grammar. Moreover, English is not my mother tongue. I could speak at least 4 languagues. If you could do as much without having grammar mistake in all languages and at the same time not a student or anything related to linguistic, I will salute you.

By blogging, I strongly that I am writing better, and I tend to read much more. So why not give others a chance to become better. One thing I know for sure is that language could not be learn by book, practice is needed. This is what I am doing here and writing about something I like.

Therefore, I hope that all bloggers do not get discourage with people commenting like that. You should welcome correction on your grammar or any mistake you have done but not insult of any kind. They are just not giving others a chance to be better person.

Who give a shits. Writing blogs are not abouts the languaging – its about expressioning… unless your teacher want you to start a blog.

  2. Adi Wong says:

stuart: strongly agree with you. This is not a language blog.

  3. WTJ says:

isn’t blogging help people to improve their language? no one is perfect, if you have perfect grammar, ppl hates you.

Don’t worry about these kind of people too much. Content and meaning is more important. :) For every 1 hate comment, you will have 9 love comments. hehe

  6. I had a similar comment on my blog, only sadly English is my first language, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I haven’t seen the comment but maybe they were just offering some friendly advice? :)

  7. rizal says:

well, i guess, once we start blogging, we are open to nasty comments. I myself have had my share of such experiences. Just don’t let these things stop you from doing what you love most-that is blogging. Blogging should be fun. My english isnt that good either, hope that helps. :)

Hahaha. Adi my friend, your English is much much better than mine and you also “kena” commented like that. I, for one, the worst kind of blogger when comes to blogging in enggeris. But as many above said, why care for it. If you start to set certain rule, you usually won’t enjoy it as before. We blog becoz we wanted to and that include anything from the heart with no filter. don’t hurt others’ feeling and dont talk bad, you’ll be fine.

*** to be honest, i like reading article that sound more with personal wording and not like the lecturer taught us – to use big word when there’s simple alternative word to be used.
Don’t worry too much Adi. I know u dont but just wanna say, I support u. :) Even you write rojak i even more like it. :D

  9. Adi Wong says:

    papa: thanks for the advice….

weird that the guy who left the email did not even reply my mail

  10. My English knowledge is very bad. But I start blog for earning money.
Google SE rejects bad grammar post?

  11. Yin Teing says:

Yep, I’ve came across people who just want to look for something bad to comment- and if they cannot find it, they’ll go after your grammar. Sometimes as bloggers, we can’t help it, we type too fast and well, our brains can get words like “effect” and “affect” mixed up. I just learned to ignore them.

  12. Vertigo Guy says:

As a native English speaker, I must say that I also make mistakes sometimes when writing in English. And overall, your English is very good!

Don’t let negative comments get you down — there are always going to be people to criticize what you do. Your blog is very informative and fun to read, so I hope you keep it up! :)

  13. Adi Wong says:

Sarpras Navas: Nope Google spider everything, but if you word it wrongly, no one will find your post

Yin Teing: True, I felt that way too.

Vertigo Guy: Thanks the comments. I posted this also to tell others that it is fine with bad Grammar because you will improve when you practice and read more.

  14. You’re right mate, you only need to keep blogging and improving. I did many grammar mistake as well on my blog, but the interesting is it attract more traffic and the visitor help me correct the mistake :D .

  15. salman says:

Hey, nice, I’m also have bad grammar but I don’t care what people say about my grammar, i think even English people cannot speak or write perfect english, I think like this, I speak in Bahasa Malaysia offend but do I speak with full tatabahasa(grammar) correctly? I think no.. It’s will be funny if I speak in full Bahasa Malaysia in correct grammar that also happen in writing, I’m only write in properly when writing official letter. Do you write email with perfect grammar? I’m not….

Ok, I’m just visit this blog and what I find is this blog can give me something I can share with other. :-)

  16. alvznull says:

Negative criticism is indeed hard to take. It lowers your morale and self-esteem. You need to get past that emotion and instead treat it constructively.

Take this opportunity to improve your command of the English language. Don’t believe those people who say that grammar doesn’t matter and you should not care. That is not true. Just like writing a program, proper style and construction is important because other programmers would need to read your code. And if it’s poorly written it will be hard to debug and maintain.

You are correct when you said that reading has helped improve your English. Indeed, the best way to learn the English language is to learn from other’s writings. And this is also why you need to double your efforts in improving your grammar because you are not doing your readers a favor who know less about the English language because they’ll be learning your bad grammar instead.

  17. ahbing says:

This gives me more reason to correct my lousy grammar.

  18. zuls says:

Your english is better than mine. Imagine that persons reading my English Blog. I surely will get more negative critism.

  19. Dion says:

I perfectly agree with you. I think I have decided myself to write in English although my grammar is not good.

  20. lsaid says:

    Hi Adi

So what? Someone commented on your writing. Big deal, I’d say. Sometimes people dont have anything else to say or do. They always see things over on the other side but not right in front of their eyes.

At least you are doing something with your life and enjoying it. You are not doing anything that will hurt other people unless offending this person’s delicate sensibilities by your “supposedly bad grammar”.

I’d say right on my friend. Take it as a challenge to prove to this “Mr Know It All” that you are as good or even better a person than he is.

I think I have said my two penny’s worth here.

Good Luck and have fun Adi.

  21. I rather care about my grandma than my grammar..lol

  22. Rom says:

yes. very true. i agree. do not mind so much about the grammar as long as we know what we are writing and people get to understand the message we want to deliver to them. that is blog what. its not novel, mag, newspaper or etc… its a BLOG. good advice though, positive thing is that; we blogger can take the advice positively and continue blogging happily, don’t mind too much the grammar… ;P

  23. ytechcity says:

I agree with you. In malaysia, english is not our major language, i think your english grammar is better than mine.

  24. abrablog says:
