Google is Affected by Economy Too

Posted by Adi Wong On January - 16 - 2009

I would never though that Google will be affected, especially for this round of recession, but it is a fact now. Only yesterday Google announce that it will stop development of Jaiku and leave it to the hands of other developers as the code become available on Google Code under apache license. Jaiku was bought by Google more than one year ago but there was no development at all while all registration to Jaiku is invite only. Jaiku is a great microblogging platform but was never developed and promoted well enough to capture the market that it should gets.

Even sadder for Dodgeball users because Google will shut down the service permanantly. It is a a mobile social networking service that lets you share your location with friends via text message. It is only available in United States, even that, it has not conquered all states.

Other service that will probably go down is Google Video and Google Search Catalog. And Google Notebook will also be left with no further development.

With so many people dependable on Google service for their daily life to working task, we are sure that popular services will not go away and will be supported by Google Adwords. Hopefully Google will learn from their lesson and not simply buy a company then stop it from developing.

  1. Maybe its time for them to get read of the “I’m feeling lucky” button because it costs them $110 million per year.

I’m not saying that you’re wrong but how to you come to the conclusion that it is because of the economic situation that they’re letting Jaiku go?

  3. I think they are just trimming the fat. But don’t be surprised to see it arise in another form.

  4. Why do they even have the “I’m feeling lucky” button, does anyone ever actually use it?

  5. Classifieds says:

I think they spread themselves out too far, trying to buy almost every category out there and they just don’t have the money to develop all of these programs that they aquired

  6. bgmaster says:

Other, example… The Google Adsense rates have down a 60%.

  7. I might be wrong but I’m sure I read on someone elses blog that Google were one of the companies weathering the storm? They may have stopped development of Jaiku but I’m not convinced it’s for financial reasons?
